Applications are now open for IDFA Project Space NL, the annual program in which emerging documentary filmmakers are guided through the development of a new film project.

Over the course of several months, selected participants work closely on their ideas, shaping them into a strong proposal for a mid-length or feature-length documentary. The program offers in-depth guidance while supporting filmmakers in developing their artistic voice.

An international perspective remains an integral part of the program, with contributions from invited filmmakers. Please note that participants are required to have a good command of Dutch, both spoken and written.

Deadline: May 17.

About the program

Throughout the training, participants receive in-depth guidance as they research their project, develop a story structure, and write a film plan. With a strong emphasis on authorship, the program encourages filmmakers to explore new narrative forms within documentary practice.

The program begins in June with a series of in-depth and small-scale introductory sessions, followed by inspirational talks by renowned international filmmakers invited as part of IDFA Project Space in early July. From August through November, participants take part in a series of sessions designed to further develop their plans in an intensive, ‘pressure cooker’ format—potentially leading to a development application with funding bodies.

The program will take on an adjusted format this year compared to previous editions, following the discontinuation of support from the NPO Fund. IDFA remains strongly committed to supporting emerging Dutch filmmakers and will therefore continue the program. The exact format and any changes will be announced in the coming period. The core of the trajectory, as outlined above, will remain unchanged.
